“House of Blues’ Jingle Blues compilation is a thoroughly entertaining collection of Christmas blues tunes. Instead of concentrating on a particular era or style, such as Chicago blues or contemporary blues-rock, the compilers chose to sample from the vast array of recorded blues styles, from Bessie Smith through Lightnin’ Hopkins, Charles Brown and Louis Jordan to B.B. King and Anson Funderburgh. Occasionally, this means that the collection isn’t quite cohesive, since the segues are a little jarring, but in general, it makes for a very entertaining collection.” – Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It’s not often you get to hear Mabel Scott wail \”Boogie Woogie Santa Claus\” and Bessie Smith pour it all out on \”At the Christmas Ball\” alongside Lightnin’ Hopkins’s blistering \”Santa\” or Amos Milburn’s classic \”Let’s Make Christmas Merry, Baby,\” but that’s the mile-wide shape of this good-times, 15-track compilation. Swingin’ Louis Jordan is likewise featured on \”Santa Claus, Santa Claus,\” while Kings Albert and B. B., John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Weatherspoon, and Lowell Fulson sharpen their axes for a mess of Christmas blues. Also included are cuts by Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Floyd Dixon, and Eddie C. Campbell, whose \”Santa’s Messin’ with the Kid\” is as funny as it is rockin’. A fantastic showcase for blues guitar and vocals, this album should please any blues fan in your house. –Martin Keller |

| “ | As the holiday celebration begins to bear down, the urge to listen to some good Christmas music just seems to grow stronger. Let’s face it though — there’s only so many times you can listen to Nat King Cole, but the problem lies in where to look for something different. Not that there isn’t a wealth of material out there. It’s just that the best songs don’t ever seem to be in the same place, and most of what you can find is a deluge of horrific renditions by the worst artists that pop music has to offer.
Well then, my friends, look no further than Jingle Blues — a compilation of songs recorded between 1925 and 1995. Some of the finest moments on the album include Albert King’s stirring guitar licks over the funky beat of Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’, B.B. King’s joyous performance of Christmas Celebration, and the slow, slinking groove Louis Jordan gives to Santa Claus, Santa Claus. However, it’s really hard to go wrong with a set that also includes twelve additional tracks from masters like John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bessie Smith, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sonny Boy Williamson. So this holiday season, stop fretting over the lack of quality Christmas albums, and give Jingle Blues a ring. musicbox.com |

You can get bored with the usual Xmas songs. This compilation makes a nice change, while still being Xmas-oriented.
